Surroundings
Sunken lanes, towns full of character and the pink granite coast: the Trégor is on the doorstep.
On foot and by bike
The walking from the gardens and the cottage is glorious: nearly every village in the Trégor waymarks loops of 11 to 12 km along sandy paths and old sunken lanes. Mountain bikers have their own trails, one of which passes right by the house. Maps and guidebooks are available at the cottage.
In Plouëc‑du‑Trieux, the baker bakes fresh bread from Tuesday to Sunday, and the bar-grocery is open every day except Wednesday.
Pontrieux, 3 km away
A “petite cité de caractère” on the Trieux, Pontrieux is a friendly little town of flower-decked wash houses, small squares, restaurants, shops, galleries and a supermarket. The market is held every Monday morning. All summer long, fest-noz and flea markets keep the surrounding villages lively.
The coast, 15 km away
The Breton coast is a quarter of an hour away: hidden coves, the customs officers' path above 60-metre cliffs, colonies of seabirds and the famous pink granite coast around Trébeurden and Perros-Guirec. The sea air and the calm work wonders; in Brittany it is never truly cold nor too hot, and something is always in flower.
At the table, the sea sets the menu: fresh oysters and mussels every day, scallops in winter.
Castles, abbeys and neighbouring gardens
Tréguier, Lannion and Paimpol are about 20 km away; Saint-Malo, Rennes, Dinan and Brest a little further. Beauport Abbey and the château de la Roche-Jagu, 7 minutes away, are well worth the detour, as are the gardens of Kerdalo, Pellinec (Penvénan), Grand Launay (Lanrivain) and Kestellec. In summer, L'Art dans les Chapelles pairs contemporary art with chapels from the 15th and 16th centuries.
